T.I.P. remembers founder 'Ma'am Tesy'
Gracious. Inspiring. Motherly.
This is Dr. Teresita U. Quirino+ of the Technological Institute of the Philippines (T.I.P.).
An accomplished educator and school administrator (she founded T.I.P. in 1962 with husband Engr. Demetrio A. Quirino), "Ma'am Tesy," as she is fondly called, remains loved by her constituents even up to this day.
"I first met TUQ when I applied back in 1996. I was so nervous before the interview but when she spoke to me with a soft voice, I felt at ease. She even asked the story behind my name," recalled T.I.P. Education Program Chair Lirio Banal.
Brenda Corpuz, T.I.P.'s senior high school consultant, shared how generous Dr. Quirino was for "always remembering employees on special occasions" like birthdays, Christmas, and New Year.
The esteemed leader – who served the institution as faculty member, president, and chairman for 54 years – was a sought-after speaker and advocate. Under her guidance, the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities (PACU) successfully lobbied for changes in the country's education system.
In 2017, Dr. Quirino was named one of two PACU Persons of the Year – a distinction that, to date, has only been conferred on 10 outstanding individuals.
With her passion and dedication to work, Dr. Quirino had gone far and beyond in bringing the blessings of higher education to the masses. She didn't merely touch lives; she also helped change them.
"A competent engineer must also have a heart and social conscience," she would often say.
This quote of hers has become embedded in the hearts and minds of T.I.P.ians, reminding them of their purpose to always do well and give back.
"Ma'am Tesy" is succeeded by her daughter, T.I.P. President Dr. Elizabeth Quirino-Lahoz, who now runs the school with EVP Angel C. Lahoz, SVP Angelo Q. Lahoz, its board of directors and executive management. According to her, "the legacy of my parents is a vibrant community of believers in higher education as a chance to have a better life."
